Construction NVQs & CSCS Card Routes — Birmingham & the West Midlands

Construction NVQs in Birmingham

Birmingham’s construction landscape is being reshaped by the HS2 terminus at Curzon Street, the continuing Big City Plan regeneration, and the Commonwealth Games legacy schemes around Perry Barr. Construction Training Group turns your on-site experience into a GQA-awarded NVQ and a clear CSCS card route, with assessment built around your work rather than a classroom timetable.

Why Birmingham’s workforce is turning to competence-based NVQs

Birmingham sits at the heart of the West Midlands’ construction activity, with HS2-linked development around Curzon Street and Digbeth running alongside city-centre regeneration and a steady programme of housing and industrial work across the wider conurbation. Principal contractors here increasingly expect operatives and supervisors to hold a recognised NVQ alongside the right CSCS card before they will be let on site.

Because Birmingham’s workload spans everything from major infrastructure and city-centre commercial schemes to housing and logistics units on the ring road, we take time up front to match each candidate to the pathway that reflects what they actually do day to day, rather than a one-size-fits-all qualification.

We work with individuals and employers across Solihull, West Bromwich, Dudley and Walsall, arranging on-site assessment locally where practical and remote evidence gathering for candidates covering multiple sites.

What’s being built in Birmingham right now

HS2’s city-centre terminus, a £2bn Smithfield and a £2.2bn estate regeneration make Birmingham the Midlands’ biggest construction market.

HS2 Curzon Street

The seven-platform high-speed terminus is under construction with Mace Dragados — the anchor of HS2’s city-centre works.

Birmingham Smithfield

The near-£2bn, 42-acre regeneration began Phase 1 construction (408 build-to-rent homes) in early 2026, with ~3,000 homes and relocated markets to follow.

Ladywood

The £2.2bn+, 20-year regeneration with Berkeley’s St Joseph — up to 12,000 homes — is moving after the 2025 development agreement, with Perry Barr’s phase two consented.

Sports Quarter

The £2bn district anchored by a proposed 62,000-seat Birmingham City stadium targets a spring 2026 planning application and 2028 construction start.

Working on any of these? Assessment happens on your site — popular routes include the Groundworks NVQ, Bricklaying NVQ, Carpentry & Joinery NVQ, Flat Roofing (Membrane) NVQ, 360 Excavator NVQ and Forward Tipping Dumper NVQ, with the Occupational Work Supervision NVQ Level 3, Construction Site Supervision NVQ Level 4 and Site Management NVQ Level 6 for those running the works.

How assessment works if you are based in Birmingham

1Tell us your role, the type of site you are working on in Birmingham or the wider West Midlands, and the CSCS card you are aiming for.

2We confirm the right GQA-awarded NVQ pathway for your role and set out exactly what evidence your portfolio will need.

3Assessment is arranged around your work — on-site in Birmingham where suitable, or through remote evidence gathering if you cover several sites across the conurbation.

4Once your portfolio is complete and, where required, a valid HS&E test is held, you can apply for the relevant CSCS card.

Employers across Birmingham & the West Midlands

We work with housebuilders, main contractors and specialist subcontractors operating across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, enrolling teams together and mapping each operative to the correct card route rather than a generic qualification. Tell us your workforce numbers and roles, and we will set out the fastest compliant route.

Beyond regional housing and commercial work, we also support employers and operatives on major national infrastructure programmes, including HS2 and Sizewell C.

Birmingham NVQ FAQs

Do you assess candidates outside Birmingham itself, elsewhere in the West Midlands?

Yes. We regularly support candidates working across Solihull, the Black Country and the wider conurbation, not just within the city itself. We will build an assessment plan around wherever your evidence is generated.

Does completing an NVQ guarantee a CSCS card?

No qualification guarantees a card on its own. The right NVQ, together with a valid HS&E test or approved alternative, supports your application, but card approval is always decided by the CSCS scheme itself.

How long does an NVQ take if I am working full-time on a Birmingham site?

It depends on your role, experience and how quickly evidence can be gathered from your current work. We will give you a realistic timescale once we understand your situation, rather than a generic figure.

Do I need an NVQ for HS2 sites like Curzon Street?

HS2 contractors require the right competence card for every role — the NVQ is the standard qualification behind CSCS/CPCS routes. We assess on site and confirm the exact requirement for your package.

Which NVQs suit Smithfield and Ladywood groundworks?

Level 2 Construction Operations (groundworks, drainage, concreting) and Plant Operations NVQs for the Blue Skilled Worker card, with Level 3-4 supervision NVQs above them.

Level 6 Contract Management "I recently completed the Level 6 Contract Management course with and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The course material is exceptionally detailed, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world construction contracting operations. Since finishing, I have felt much more confident in handling complex disputes and managing strategic procurement processes. The instructors are experienced professionals who provide practical insights rather than just academic theory. A must-do for senior professionals looking to solidify their credentials."

I recently completed my NVQ through Construction Training Group as part of obtaining my CPCS Blue Card, and I can honestly say the experience was excellent from start to finish. From the initial booking, everything was handled professionally and completely hassle free. Communication was clear throughout, and the whole process was organised efficiently, which made it easy to get everything arranged around work. The assessor came out to site and carried out the assessment properly, observing me operating the machine in a real working environment to confirm competency. It was a straightforward and fair process based on actual day-to-day work. The assessor was knowledgeable, professional, and easy to get on with. He explained everything clearly, put me at ease, and made sure I understood what was required throughout. What stood out most was how smooth and genuine the whole experience was. No unnecessary complications, just a well-run, professional service focused on getting you through the process properly. I would highly recommend Construction Training Group to anyone looking to complete their NVQ
