NPORS Training & Courses
NPORS training gives plant, lift truck and machine operators the recognised certification they need to work safely and legally on UK construction sites. At Construction Training Group (CTG) we deliver NPORS courses across more than 130 categories of machinery – from excavators and forklifts to cranes, dumpers and specialist plant – with both novice courses and experienced worker tests available on-site, nationwide.
As an NPORS-approved provider, we help operators earn the NPORS card that employers and principal contractors ask for. Whether you are stepping onto a site for the first time or you already have years behind the controls, there is an NPORS route that fits. Browse the machine categories below, or read on to understand how NPORS training works and which course is right for you.
What is NPORS training?
NPORS (the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) is a leading accreditation body for plant and machinery operators in the UK. An NPORS qualification proves that an operator has been trained and tested to a recognised national standard for a specific machine or task. On successful completion you receive an NPORS operator card, which is widely accepted across construction, utilities, highways, rail and industrial sites.
NPORS offers two main card routes. The traditional NPORS card is accepted on many sites in its own right, while the NPORS card with CSCS logo is recognised as equivalent to a CSCS card on sites that require CSCS registration – provided you have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test. Our team will advise which card best suits the sites you work on.
Novice and experienced worker NPORS routes
NPORS novice training
The novice route is designed for operators who are new to a machine or need full training from the ground up. It combines theory and practical instruction with an end assessment, so you leave competent and certified. Novice courses are ideal for career changers, apprentices and anyone adding a new machine to their skill set.
NPORS experienced worker test
If you already operate a machine confidently but have never been formally certified, the experienced worker test lets you validate your existing skills in a single, shorter assessment. It is the fastest way for seasoned operators to get carded without repeating training they do not need.
Not sure which route applies to you? Contact our team and we will match you to the right NPORS course.
NPORS course categories
We deliver NPORS training across the full machine range. Explore each category below to see the individual courses available and book the assessment you need.

NPORS lift truck courses covering counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, rough terrain forklifts and telehandlers – the most requested tickets for warehousing, logistics and construction sites.
Earthmoving Machinery Training
Certification for excavators and earthmoving plant, including the 360 excavator, mini and micro diggers, skid steer loaders, trenchers and soil compactors – core skills for groundworks and civil engineering.
Cranes & Lifting Training
Lifting operations training for mobile cranes, tower cranes, crawler cranes, spider and pick-and-carry cranes, plus lorry loaders, slinger/signaller and appointed person roles.
Access Equipment Training
NPORS access platform courses for MEWPs, scissor lifts and boom-type platforms, so operators can work safely at height on any site.
Transportation Training
On-site transport tickets including tipper lorries, flatbed and low-loader HGVs, skip and hook loaders, and vehicle marshaller/banksman training.
Street Works Training
Highways and street works courses covering road planers, Chapter 8 traffic management, signing lighting & guarding, kerb laying and excavation & reinstatement.
Small Equipment Training
Certification for hand-operated and pedestrian plant such as wacker plates, plate compactors, cut-off saws, concrete breakers, disc cutters and abrasive wheels.
Miscellaneous Equipment Training
A broad range of specialist plant including concrete pumps, piling rigs, mobile crushers and screens, directional drilling rigs and generators.
Health & Safety Training
NPORS health & safety courses covering working at height, confined spaces, manual handling, fire marshal, first aid, asbestos awareness and more.
Construction Site Safety Scheme
Site Safety Plus style training for operatives, supervisors and managers, plus director health & safety responsibilities.
NPORS vs CPCS: which do you need?
Operators often ask whether they need an NPORS or a CPCS card. Both are respected plant operator schemes and cover similar machines. CPCS is run by CITB and is frequently specified on larger commercial and infrastructure sites, while NPORS is valued for its flexibility, on-site testing and faster turnaround. Many operators hold NPORS cards and work across the vast majority of UK sites without issue – and the NPORS card with CSCS logo meets CSCS requirements where they apply. If you are unsure which scheme a particular contractor accepts, our team can advise before you book.

NPORS training FAQs
How long does NPORS training take?
It depends on the machine and your experience. Experienced worker tests can often be completed in a day, while novice courses run over several days to allow full training. We will confirm the exact duration for your chosen course when you enquire.
Is an NPORS card accepted on all sites?
NPORS cards are accepted on the majority of UK construction sites. Where a site specifically requires CSCS registration, the NPORS card with CSCS logo (issued after passing the CITB HS&E test) meets that requirement.
How long is an NPORS card valid?
Most NPORS trained operator and competent operator cards are valid for either two or five years depending on the route taken, after which renewal or reassessment is required. We will explain the renewal path for your card at the time of training.
Do you offer NPORS training near me?
Yes. We deliver NPORS training on-site across the whole of the UK, so training comes to you and your team wherever your project is based. Contact us to arrange a date.
