Boom Lift NVQ Level 2

Boom Lift NVQ Level 2

Articulated or telescopic, the boom takes you where scaffolding can’t go. Prove your cherry picker competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own platform, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.

Qualification Overview

Boom lifts reach over, around and up — and every advantage they give comes with an operator responsibility: outreach against stability, harness and restraint discipline in the basket, crush hazards at the controls, ground that must hold a point-loaded machine. This NVQ documents that competence from the platform work you already do, articulated or telescopic.

A CTG assessor visits your site, observes real boom operation at working height, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion covering ground assessment, positioning, and rescue arrangements. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.

You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the boom-type MEWP unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the boom MEWP unit covers

Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the boom-type MEWP unit sits in the Work Platforms pathway group — preparing and operating boom lifts, self-propelled and static. Scissor platforms and mast climbers are separate units — see the Scissor Lift NVQ and Mast Climber NVQ. Your certificate reflects only the unit evidenced.

Who this NVQ is for

Experienced boom operators in steel erection, cladding and glazing support, M&E and maintenance work at height. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: pre-use and function checks including emergency lowering, assessing ground and setting up on slopes or spreader pads, planning outreach within the envelope, harness and restraint use in the basket, positioning at the work face without contact, and travel and stowage procedures.

Entry requirements

No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate boom lifts at work, on a site a CTG assessor can visit. New operators should complete MEWP training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.

CSCS card route
Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card example

This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. IPAF and similar cards certify training separately — CSCS issues its cards, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.

NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?

NPORS (or IPAF) training certifies platform skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use daily and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? Start with the NPORS Boom MEWP course, then return for the NVQ.

Units — mandatory and optional

You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Accessing Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.

Mandatory units (all operators)

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

Your machine unit — Accessing Plant pathway

  • Preparing and Operating Boom-type Mobile Elevating Work Platforms – MEWP – in the Workplace

Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Boom Lift NVQ take?

Typically 4–8 weeks, with daily platform work driving the pace.

Articulated and telescopic booms — both in one unit?

Yes, boom-type platforms map to the one unit; your portfolio evidences the machines you actually operate.

Cherry picker, boom lift, MEWP — same thing here?

Yes — “cherry picker” is the everyday name for the boom-type MEWP this page covers.

Can platform crews across trades enrol together?

Yes — operators register here while their trade work may map to trade NVQs; we’ll sort the combination honestly. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Level 6 Contract Management "I recently completed the Level 6 Contract Management course with and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The course material is exceptionally detailed, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world construction contracting operations. Since finishing, I have felt much more confident in handling complex disputes and managing strategic procurement processes. The instructors are experienced professionals who provide practical insights rather than just academic theory. A must-do for senior professionals looking to solidify their credentials."

I recently completed my NVQ through Construction Training Group as part of obtaining my CPCS Blue Card, and I can honestly say the experience was excellent from start to finish. From the initial booking, everything was handled professionally and completely hassle free. Communication was clear throughout, and the whole process was organised efficiently, which made it easy to get everything arranged around work. The assessor came out to site and carried out the assessment properly, observing me operating the machine in a real working environment to confirm competency. It was a straightforward and fair process based on actual day-to-day work. The assessor was knowledgeable, professional, and easy to get on with. He explained everything clearly, put me at ease, and made sure I understood what was required throughout. What stood out most was how smooth and genuine the whole experience was. No unnecessary complications, just a well-run, professional service focused on getting you through the process properly. I would highly recommend Construction Training Group to anyone looking to complete their NVQ

Entry requirements

You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.

To start Level 2 qualification you need:

  • A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
  • Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
  • A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
  • Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
  • A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.

You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.

Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.

The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
