Compact Crane NVQ Level 2
Mini cranes work where nothing else fits — through doorways, on slabs, inside buildings. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own lifts, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Compact and spider cranes take real lifting capacity into places conventional cranes never reach: finished floors, courtyards, glass façades, plant rooms. Working tight to people and structures, on outriggers over slabs with load limits, the operator’s planning matters more, not less. This NVQ is the recognised proof of that competence, gathered from the lifts you already do.
A CTG assessor attends your jobs and collects evidence while you work: setting up in confined areas, confirming floor loadings and outrigger mats, configuring for the duty, and lifting to the slinger/signaller’s direction. Photos, witness statements and professional discussion complete the portfolio — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the compact crane unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the compact crane unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the compact crane sits in the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group — preparing and operating compact cranes to lift and transfer loads. The Certificate and the Plant Operations Diploma are separate qualifications with different plant groups; your certificate reflects only the units you’re registered for and evidenced on. Operate larger cranes too? Crawler, tower and mobile cranes sit under the Plant Operations Diploma — call us and we’ll route you correctly.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced compact/spider/pick-and-carry crane operators in glazing installation, steel erection in existing buildings, M&E plant moves and confined urban sites. You should be operating with minimal supervision on regular lifts. Typical evidence: transporting and positioning the crane through restricted access, verifying ground and slab capacity, setting outriggers and levelling, duty checks against the chart, lifting glass units or plant to the lift plan, and stowing and securing the machine.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a compact crane on jobs a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete crane training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use at work and supports the Blue CSCS application. New to mini cranes? Start with the NPORS Compact Crane course, then return for the NVQ once you’re lifting for a living.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Compact Cranes to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Compact Crane NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, planned around your lift bookings.
Most of my lifts are glazing units — is that suitable evidence?
Ideal. Glass handling with vacuum lifters and tight tolerances demonstrates exactly the preparation and control the unit assesses.
I work inside occupied buildings — can an assessor attend?
Yes, our assessors work to your site’s access and induction rules, including occupied and secure premises.
Can my company enrol several operators together?
Yes — group enrolments across your fleet are straightforward to schedule. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
