Crawler Crane NVQ Level 2
Operating a crawler crane above 10 tonnes puts every lift on your judgement. This work-based NVQ proves it — assessed on your own crane during real lifts, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Crawler cranes hold the big civils and infrastructure lifts — piling support, bridge beams, tunnel segments, marine work — travelling on tracks where mobile cranes can’t set up. Above 10 tonnes, the operator’s understanding of duties, ground and signals is what keeps the lift plan honest. This NVQ turns that competence into a recognised qualification without taking you off the crane.
A CTG assessor comes to your site and gathers evidence from genuine lifting operations: duty checks against the load chart, travelling and repositioning with suspended equipment where planned, working to the appointed person’s lift plan and the slinger’s signals, and out-of-service procedures. Photos, witness statements and professional discussion complete the portfolio — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, with the crawler crane (above 10 tonnes) unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the crawler crane unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Diploma, the crawler crane above 10 tonnes sits in the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group — lifting and transferring loads. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. It doesn’t automatically cover tower or mobile cranes, which are separate units — see the Tower Crane NVQ and Mobile Crane NVQ if you operate those, and note that compact cranes sit under the Plant Operations Certificate.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced crawler crane operators on civils, piling, bridge, marine and energy projects. You should be operating with minimal supervision and lifting regularly at work. Typical evidence: pre-use inspections and function checks, configuring for the duty and confirming against the load chart, travelling and setting up on assessed ground with mats where specified, executing lifts to the lift plan with slinger/signaller communication, and securing the crane out of service in wind limits.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must be operating a crawler crane above 10 tonnes at work, on lifts a CTG assessor can attend. New crane operators should complete training and testing first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. Card-scheme requirements for crane operators can also involve CPCS/NPORS operator categories — CSCS and the card schemes decide card outcomes, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills — the entry route onto the crane. The NVQ proves workplace competence and is what card schemes typically ask for to upgrade from a trained-operator card to a competent-operator card. Not operating yet? Start with the NPORS Crawler Crane course, then return for the NVQ once you’re working.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Crawler Cranes (above 10 tons) to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Crawler Crane NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, planned around your lifting programme.
Does the NVQ upgrade my NPORS/CPCS trained operator card?
An achieved NVQ is what the card schemes typically require to move to the competent operator grade — we’ll confirm the exact route for your card at enrolment rather than promise outcomes.
My crane is under 10 tonnes — is this the right page?
No — compact and smaller cranes sit under the Plant Operations Certificate. See the Compact Crane NVQ or call us to be routed correctly.
Can lifts under an appointed person’s plan be observed without disrupting the job?
Yes. Assessors fit into the lift team’s arrangements — observation never interferes with the lift plan or exclusion zones.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
