Crawler Tractor Side Boom NVQ Level 2
Pipeline lifting is team lifting — several side booms, one pipe string, zero margin. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on the right-of-way, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Side booms exist for one job most cranes can’t do: carrying long, heavy loads alongside the machine while travelling — lifting, holding and lowering pipe strings into the trench in step with other machines. The operator balances counterweight, boom angle and ground on the move, usually in a coordinated convoy. This NVQ documents that specialist competence from your normal spread work.
A CTG assessor comes to the right-of-way and gathers evidence from live operations: pre-use checks, rigging and hook arrangements with the pipe crew, coordinated lifts and travel with other side booms, lower-in operations, and securing the machine. Photos, witness statements from spread supervision and professional discussion complete the portfolio — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, with the crawler tractor side boom unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the side boom unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Diploma, the crawler-tractor side boom sits in the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group — lifting and transferring loads, characteristically in pipeline operations. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. It doesn’t automatically cover crawler cranes, dozers or pipe-handling excavators — tell us your full machine list and we’ll register the right combination.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced side boom operators on gas, water and oil pipeline spreads, outfall and cable-duct projects. You should be operating with minimal supervision as part of a lifting team. Typical evidence: daily inspections of boom, winches and hook gear, balanced pick-ups with correct counterweight setting, coordinated travel carrying pipe with other machines, lower-in to the trench under the lift supervisor’s control, and working to right-of-way rules around the open trench and bell holes.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a side boom on a live spread a CTG assessor can visit. New to the machine? Complete operator training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills (Side Boom is NPORS category N242); the NVQ proves the competence you already use on the spread and supports the Blue CSCS application. Not operating yet? Ask about NPORS side boom training via our NPORS courses, then return for the NVQ once you’re working.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and operating crawler-tractor side booms to lift and transfer loads in the workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Side Boom NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks. Pipeline spreads run continuous lifting work, so evidence gathers quickly while the spread is live.
Our spread moves along the route weekly — can the assessor follow?
Yes. National coverage means the assessor meets the spread wherever it’s working that week.
Is coordinated multi-machine lifting harder to evidence?
It’s the best evidence there is for this unit — team lower-ins show exactly the competence the standard describes.
Can the whole side boom crew enrol together?
Yes — assessing a lifting team together is efficient and mirrors how you actually work. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
