Dragline Operator NVQ Level 2
Already operating a dragline? Prove it with an NVQ assessed on your own machine, on your own site — no classroom, no test centre, and the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Draglines do the heavy extraction work that other excavators can’t reach — casting a bucket out across opencast faces, lagoons, riverbanks and stockpiles and dragging material back to the machine. If you’re operating one for a living, this NVQ turns that experience into a nationally recognised qualification without taking you off the job.
There is no course to attend and nothing to sit in a classroom for. A CTG assessor comes to your site and builds your portfolio from the work you already do: watching you set up, extract and load, talking through how you plan the swing and manage the ground, and collecting photos and witness statements from people you work with. Assessor visits are included as standard.
You come out with the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, with your dragline units evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the dragline units cover
Within the Plant Operations Diploma, dragline work sits in the Extracting Plant pathway group. Depending on the work you do, your evidence covers extracting ground and loose materials with a dragline, and excavating ground where your role includes it — both dragline units are explained and assessed through this one qualification route.
Your certificate reflects the machine units you are registered for and evidenced on. It does not automatically cover every machine in the Extracting Plant group — if you also operate a 360 or a loading shovel, ask us about adding the right units.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced dragline operators working in opencast and surface mining, quarrying, dredging, flood defence, riverbank and lagoon work. You should already be operating with minimal supervision and have regular access to a dragline at work, because that’s where the evidence comes from. Typical evidence includes setting up on prepared standing, planning the cast and swing, extracting and stockpiling or loading material, shutting down and securing the machine, and working to exclusion zones with a banksman or slinger where lifts and services demand it.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You need to be currently working as a dragline operator with access to a live site where a CTG assessor can observe you. If you’re new to draglines rather than experienced, an NVQ isn’t the starting point — novice operators should look at plant training first, then return for the NVQ once working.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. The card application also requires the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG — we provide the qualification that supports your application. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing teaches and checks machine skills — the right route for new operators or operators adding a machine. An NVQ assesses competence you already have, in your normal workplace, and is the qualification CSCS looks for on the skilled route. Many dragline operators hold both: an operator card for the machine and the NVQ for the Blue card. CTG delivers both — see our NPORS courses.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine units for the plant you operate — drawn from the Extracting / Excavating Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine units — Extracting / Excavating Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Draglines to Extract Ground and/or Loose Materials in the Workplace
- Preparing and Operating Draglines to Excavate Ground in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Dragline Operator NVQ take?
Most operators complete in 4–8 weeks. It depends on how quickly evidence can be gathered on your site and how responsive you are with the portfolio.
Do I have to leave site or attend a centre?
No. Everything is assessed where you work — the assessor comes to you, anywhere in the UK.
My dragline work is seasonal — can assessment fit around that?
Yes. Your assessor plans visits around when you’re actually on the machine, including shutdown and campaign work.
Can my employer put several operators through together?
Yes — group enrolments on one site are common and easy to schedule. CITB-registered employers may also be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
