Ergonomic Manipulating Machine NVQ Level 2
Glazing robots, vacuum manipulators, pick-and-place machines — precise lifting where hands can’t go. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your installs, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Ergonomic manipulating machines take loads that used to wreck backs — glass units, stone panels, precast elements — and place them with machine precision. The operator combines lifting judgement with millimetre positioning, usually close to finished work and other trades. This NVQ recognises that specialist competence, evidenced from your normal installation work.
A CTG assessor attends your installs, observes the machine being set up, loads attached and placed, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion about capacity checks, vacuum or clamp integrity and exclusion zones. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the ergonomic manipulating machine unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the manipulating machine unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers operating specialist manipulating machinery to lift and position loads — glazing manipulators, vacuum lifters on carriers, and similar pick-and-place plant. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Compact cranes carrying loads on hooks are a separate unit — see the Compact Crane NVQ; many glazing crews hold both.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced manipulator operators in glazing and curtain walling, stone and panel installation, and precast fit-out. You should be operating with minimal supervision on regular installs. Typical evidence: machine and attachment pre-use checks, confirming load weight against capacity at reach, vacuum pad or clamp testing on the unit, manoeuvring through finished areas, precise placement to the fixing team’s direction, and safe release and stowage.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate manipulating machinery at work, on installs a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete equipment training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
Manufacturer or NPORS-style training teaches the equipment; the NVQ proves workplace competence and supports the Blue CSCS application. If you’re still at the training stage, see our NPORS courses, then return for the NVQ once you’re installing regularly.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Fork-lift Trucks pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Fork-lift Trucks pathway
- Preparing and operating ergonomic manipulating machines to lift and transfer loads in the workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Ergonomic Manipulating Machine NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, tracking your installation programme.
Our machine is a tracked glazing robot — does that fit this unit?
Yes, where it’s manipulating machinery lifting and positioning loads. Describe your equipment at enrolment and we’ll confirm the mapping before you commit.
We install inside occupied buildings — workable for assessment?
Yes, assessors follow your site’s access rules, including occupied and secure premises.
Can the installation crew enrol together?
Yes — operators take this unit while fixers may suit trade NVQs; we’ll map the whole crew in one call. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
What card does this NVQ lead to?
Leads to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card
On completion you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, proving competence in your trade.
Your NVQ pathway
