Excavator as a Crane NVQ Level 2
Lifting pipes, cages and trench boxes with the excavator is craneage — and it deserves crane-grade proof. This work-based NVQ evidences your suspended-load competence on site, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
On groundworks and utility jobs, the excavator doubles as the site crane: pipes into the trench, boxes in and out, cages onto pins. Done right, it’s planned lifting with checked accessories, known duties and a slinger in control of the load. This NVQ proves you do it right — assessed from the lifting you already carry out with a suitably equipped machine.
A CTG assessor attends your site and gathers evidence from genuine lifting operations: confirming the machine’s lift capacity and check-valve equipment, working with the slinger/signaller, controlling suspended loads clear of people and the trench edge, and landing loads safely. Photos, witness statements and professional discussion complete the portfolio — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the excavator crane unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the excavator crane unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers using a suitably equipped excavator to lift and transfer suspended loads. It is a lifting unit, not a digging unit — excavating work itself is assessed under the 360 or 180 excavator routes of the Plant Operations Diploma. Many operators pair the two; tell us your role and we’ll register the right combination. Your certificate reflects only the units evidenced.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced excavator operators who lift as part of their normal work — pipes, manhole rings, trench boxes, cages and kerb packs — on groundworks, drainage and utilities jobs. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: confirming machine lifting capacity and certification, checking accessories with the slinger, lifting to signals with the load under control, keeping people clear of suspended loads, landing and releasing loads safely, and recording checks.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You need to be regularly performing excavator lifting operations at work, on a live site a CTG assessor can attend. If you don’t yet lift with the machine, start with training — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies skills (many operators add the lifting-operations endorsement to their excavator category); the NVQ proves workplace competence and supports the Blue CSCS application. See NPORS courses if you’re at the training stage.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Excavator Cranes to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Excavator as a Crane NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — most groundworks jobs lift daily, so evidence builds fast.
Do I need this if I already have a 360 Excavator NVQ?
They’re different units: one proves excavating, this one proves lifting suspended loads. Many employers on drainage and utilities work now ask for the lifting evidence specifically. We’ll advise honestly whether you need one or both.
Does my machine need anything special?
Lifting duties must be genuine: rated lift capacity, check valves and certification appropriate to the loads. Your assessor confirms the setup as part of the evidence.
Does my slinger need their own qualification?
The slinger/signaller has a separate NVQ — see the Slinger Signaller NVQ. Crews often enrol together.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
