Traditional and Heritage Supervisor NVQ Level 4

Traditional and Heritage Supervisor NVQ Level 4

Supervising work on listed and traditional buildings means protecting fabric you can’t reorder from a merchant. Prove that competence with a Level 4 NVQ evidenced from your projects, on the typical route to the Gold Supervisor CSCS card. It costs £1,200 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Gold Supervisor card.

Qualification Overview

Heritage supervision adds a layer no new-build role carries: conservation officers and listed building consents, traditional materials with their own behaviour and lead times, specialist trades that can’t be substituted, and the standing rule that everything removed must be recorded. This Level 4 NVQ recognises that specialised supervisory competence, evidenced from the traditional and heritage projects you already run.

A CTG assessor visits your projects, observes real supervision, and gathers records, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.

You achieve the GQA Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision, qualification code 610/1090/X, through the Traditional and Heritage Building pathway — the typical qualification route to the Gold Supervisor CSCS card.

What the Heritage pathway covers

One of the formal pathways of the Level 4 Construction Site Supervision qualification, for supervisors whose evidence comes from traditional and heritage building work. Other pathways include Highways, Residential, Tunnelling and Retrofit — see the parent qualification page.

Who this NVQ is for

Working supervisors with conservation, restoration and traditional building contractors — churches, listed housing, institutional and estate work. You should be supervising with genuine responsibility. Typical evidence: sequencing specialist trades on fragile fabric, coordinating with conservation officers and architects, controlling traditional materials from lime mortars to specials, protecting retained fabric and recording removals, managing scaffolding and access around historic structures, and quality inspections against conservation specifications.

Entry requirements

No formal entry qualifications. You must currently supervise traditional or heritage building work a CTG assessor can visit. The pathway suits supervisors whose projects genuinely involve historic or traditionally constructed buildings.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Heritage Supervisor NVQ take?

Typically 4–8 weeks, following your project programme.

Do occupied historic buildings complicate assessment?

No — assessors follow your site’s access and conservation rules; that environment is the point of the pathway.

My projects mix heritage and general refurbishment — which pathway?

Whichever genuinely dominates your evidence. Describe your project list and we’ll register the honest fit.

Is there a heritage manager route above this?

Site managers on traditional work should discuss the Level 6 Site Management routes with us — we’ll advise which pathway the evidence supports.

Level 6 Contract Management "I recently completed the Level 6 Contract Management course with and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The course material is exceptionally detailed, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world construction contracting operations. Since finishing, I have felt much more confident in handling complex disputes and managing strategic procurement processes. The instructors are experienced professionals who provide practical insights rather than just academic theory. A must-do for senior professionals looking to solidify their credentials."

I recently completed my NVQ through Construction Training Group as part of obtaining my CPCS Blue Card, and I can honestly say the experience was excellent from start to finish. From the initial booking, everything was handled professionally and completely hassle free. Communication was clear throughout, and the whole process was organised efficiently, which made it easy to get everything arranged around work. The assessor came out to site and carried out the assessment properly, observing me operating the machine in a real working environment to confirm competency. It was a straightforward and fair process based on actual day-to-day work. The assessor was knowledgeable, professional, and easy to get on with. He explained everything clearly, put me at ease, and made sure I understood what was required throughout. What stood out most was how smooth and genuine the whole experience was. No unnecessary complications, just a well-run, professional service focused on getting you through the process properly. I would highly recommend Construction Training Group to anyone looking to complete their NVQ

Entry requirements

You supervise others: planning work, allocating it, and checking it meets the standard.

To start Level 4 qualification you need:

  • A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
  • Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
  • A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
  • Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
  • A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.

You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.

Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.

The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
