Loader Compressor NVQ Level 2
Loader up front, compressed air on tap — one machine running the whole small-works gang. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own jobs, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
The loader compressor is the utilities gang’s do-everything machine: a compact loader for extracting and clearing spoil, plus on-board compressed air driving the breakers that opened the ground in the first place. The operator runs both halves — loading out around an open excavation while managing air tools, hoses and the crew using them. This NVQ documents that combined competence from your normal jobs.
A CTG assessor visits your work, observes real extraction, loading and air-supply operation, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the loader compressor unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the loader compressor unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the loader compressor unit sits in the Extracting Plant pathway group — extracting loose materials with loader-compressor equipment. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Standalone compressors and hand-held breakers are small-equipment matters, and skid steers without air plant map to the Skid Steer Loader NVQ — tell us your machine and we’ll register the right route.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced loader compressor operators on utilities, streetworks and small civils gangs. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: daily checks of loader and air plant, extracting and loading broken-out material around open excavations, managing hoses and tool connections safely, supporting the gang’s breaking and reinstatement cycle, working within traffic management, and securing the machine between visits.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a loader compressor at work, on jobs a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on the gang and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? See our NPORS courses (Compressor and related categories), then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Extracting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Extracting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Loader Compressors to Extract Loose Materials in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Loader Compressor NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, following your gang’s job list.
Our jobs are short street works — how does observation work?
The assessor meets you on scheduled jobs; several short visits across different sites make a strong portfolio.
Does my streetworks reinstatement work belong in this NVQ?
Machine operation belongs here; the excavation and reinstatement occupation itself has its own qualification — see the Excavation and Reinstatement NVQ. Many gang members take both.
Can the whole gang enrol together?
Yes — mixed-role gangs are our standard work. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
