Lorry Loader NVQ Level 2
Every delivery is a lifting operation. Prove your competence on the knuckle-boom loader crane with a work-based NVQ assessed on your rounds — no classroom, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
The lorry loader — the knuckle-boom loader crane behind the cab, often called a HIAB after the best-known brand — turns a delivery driver into a crane operator several times a day. Kerbside, on tight sites, near overheads, with the public walking past: every set of outriggers is a fresh lifting plan. This NVQ documents that competence from the deliveries you already make.
A CTG assessor meets you on drops and collections, observes setup and lifting, and gathers evidence — photos, witness statements and professional discussion about duties, stability and exclusion zones. No exams and no classroom, and assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the lorry loader unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the lorry loader unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the lorry loader unit covers operating lorry loaders and knuckle-boom loader cranes to lift and transfer loads. “HIAB” is a manufacturer’s brand name used here only because it’s how many operators know the machine — CTG has no affiliation with any manufacturer. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced; skip-handling equipment is a separate unit — see the Skip Handler NVQ.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced lorry loader operators delivering building materials, plant, cabins, glass or steel. You should be operating with minimal supervision on regular lifting work. Typical evidence: siting the vehicle and deploying stabilisers on varied ground, duty checks for reach and load, using brick grabs, hooks or forks appropriate to the load, controlling lifts near the public with exclusion zones, remote-control operation where fitted, and stowing the crane for travel.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a lorry loader at work, with deliveries a CTG assessor can attend. New to loader cranes? Complete operator training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills (Lorry Loader is NPORS category N107); the NVQ proves the competence you already use on your rounds and supports the Blue CSCS application. At the training stage? Start with the NPORS Lorry Loader course, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Lorry Loaders or Knuckle Boom Cranes to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Lorry Loader NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — multiple lifts a day means evidence builds very quickly.
How does the assessor observe me when I’m mobile all day?
We plan around your delivery schedule and meet you at drops. Evidence across different sites and ground conditions strengthens the portfolio.
Does ALLMI or other loader-crane training count towards this?
Prior training certificates aren’t the NVQ, but they sit comfortably alongside it — the NVQ adds the workplace-competence evidence card schemes and clients ask for. Bring your certificates to induction.
Can our transport team enrol several drivers?
Yes — fleets are our normal work. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
