Mast Climber NVQ Level 2
A moving workshop on the façade — mast climbers carry crews, materials and the day’s programme. Prove your operating competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your platform, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Mast-climbing work platforms replace scaffolding on façade packages — bricklaying, cladding, recladding and repair — moving whole gangs and their materials up and down the building all day. The operator manages loading limits, level travel, gates and interlocks, and the weather calls that stop the platform before the wind does. This NVQ documents that competence from your normal shifts.
A CTG assessor visits your site, observes real platform operation — loading checks, raising and lowering with the crew aboard, landing procedures — and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom, and assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the mast-climber unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the mast climber unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the mast-climber unit sits in the Work Platforms pathway group — preparing and operating mast-climbing work platforms. Erection and dismantling of the mast is the installer’s competence, not this unit’s; operation is what’s assessed. Construction hoists are a separate unit — see the Construction Hoist NVQ. Your certificate reflects only the unit evidenced.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced mast climber operators on masonry, cladding and recladding packages. You should be operating with minimal supervision as the platform’s designated operator. Typical evidence: daily pre-use checks and test lifts, managing platform loading within limits and evenly spread, raising and lowering with crews and materials aboard, landing-level gates and interlocks, wind and weather limits, and liaison with the installer on ties and inspections.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a mast climber, on a site a CTG assessor can visit. New operators should complete platform training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies platform skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use daily and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? Start with the NPORS Mast Climbing Work Platform course, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Accessing Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Accessing Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Mast Climber-type Mobile Elevating Work Platforms – MEWP – in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Mast Climber NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — façade programmes run the platform daily.
I’m a bricklayer who also operates the platform — which NVQ first?
Both are legitimate: this unit for the platform, the Bricklaying NVQ for the trade. Tell us your role split and we’ll sequence them sensibly.
Single or twin mast configurations — both covered?
Yes, both are mast-climbing work platforms under the unit; evidence comes from what you operate.
Can the façade gang enrol together?
Yes — operator and trades in one visit plan. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
