Overhead Crane NVQ Level 2
Gantry and overhead crane work looks routine until it isn’t. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed in your own facility or site, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Overhead cranes move the heaviest items in precast yards, steel fabrication shops, segment factories and tunnelling logistics — repetitive lifts over people’s heads, often on pendant or remote control, with swinging loads the ever-present risk. This NVQ documents the competence behind that routine: planning, control and communication, evidenced from your normal work.
A CTG assessor visits your facility, observes genuine lifting and transferring, checks your pre-use inspections and talks through load control, signalling and segregation. Photos and witness statements complete the portfolio. No exams and no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the overhead crane unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the overhead crane unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the overhead crane sits in the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group — operating overhead and gantry cranes to lift and transfer loads. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced; it doesn’t automatically cover mobile, tower or compact cranes, which are separate units under their own qualifications.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced overhead/gantry crane operators in precast concrete works, steel fabrication, tunnel segment plants and heavy stores. You should be operating with minimal supervision on daily lifts. Typical evidence: pre-use checks of hoist, hook and limits, selecting lifting accessories with the slinger, controlled travel with loads over defined routes, avoiding shock loading and swing, tandem lifts where your facility performs them, and reporting defects and isolating the crane.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate an overhead or gantry crane at work, somewhere a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete crane training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves workplace competence and supports the Blue CSCS application. New to overhead cranes? Start with the NPORS Overhead Gantry Crane course, then return for the NVQ once you’re operating daily.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Overhead Cranes to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Overhead Crane NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — daily production lifting means evidence builds quickly.
I operate by remote/pendant from the floor — does that count?
Yes. Floor-controlled operation is standard overhead crane practice and fully valid evidence for the unit.
We’re a factory, not a construction site — is the NVQ still right?
Yes, where your lifting genuinely serves construction products and operations — precast, steelwork, segments. Call us and we’ll confirm your setting fits before you enrol.
Can several crane operators on our shift enrol together?
Yes — one visit plan can cover the team. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
