Reach Truck NVQ Level 2
High racking, tight aisles, loads placed by feel at eight metres — reach truck work rewards precision. Prove yours with a work-based NVQ assessed where you operate, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Reach trucks make narrow-aisle storage possible — the mast reaches, the truck doesn’t, and the operator judges depth and level at heights where a misplaced pallet becomes a serious incident. In construction product stores, merchant warehouses and site logistics hubs, that skill runs the building’s supply line. This NVQ documents it from your normal shifts.
A CTG assessor visits your workplace, observes real put-away and picking at height, checks your pre-use routine and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the reach truck unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the reach truck unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the reach truck unit covers lifting and transferring loads with reach trucks in racking environments. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Counterbalance and order-picking machines are separate — see the Counterbalance Forklift NVQ, and tell us your fleet at enrolment.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced reach truck operators in construction product warehouses, merchant distribution centres and project logistics stores. You should be operating with minimal supervision daily. Typical evidence: pre-shift checks including reach mechanism and tilt, entering and working aisles with pedestrians excluded, placing and retrieving pallets at height square to the racking, using cameras or height selectors where fitted, marshalling loads to despatch, and battery care and charging discipline.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a reach truck at work, somewhere a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete truck training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use each shift and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? Start with the NPORS Reach Truck course, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Fork-lift Trucks pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Fork-lift Trucks pathway
- Preparing and Operating Reach Trucks to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Reach Truck NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — put-away volumes mean evidence builds quickly.
Is warehouse work valid for a construction NVQ?
Where the store genuinely serves construction — merchant, product manufacturer or project logistics — yes. We confirm your setting fits before enrolment.
Do camera systems and height pre-selectors weaken the evidence?
No — using the truck’s aids properly is competence, not a shortcut. Your judgement and checks remain the evidence.
Can drivers across shifts enrol together?
Yes — we schedule visits across shift patterns, nights included. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
