Rear Tipping Dump Truck NVQ Level 2
Articulated or rigid, the dump truck moves the site’s tonnage — and tips it where a mistake rolls machines. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your hauls, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Rear-tipping dump trucks carry the site’s biggest payloads over its worst ground. The operator’s judgement — haul road condition, tip-edge stability, body-up discipline, loading position under the excavator — decides whether thirty tonnes arrives safely or becomes the day’s incident report. This NVQ documents that judgement from your normal hauls.
A CTG assessor visits your site, observes real load-haul-tip cycles, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion covering tip-edge protocol, gradients and interaction with loading plant. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the rear-tipping dump truck unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the dump truck unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers receiving, transporting and discharging materials with rear-tipping dump trucks — articulated and rigid machines both map here. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Forward-tipping site dumpers are a separate unit with a live page — see the Forward Tipping Dumper NVQ; road-going tippers are transport work, not this qualification.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced ADT and rigid dump truck operators on bulk earthworks, quarries, opencast and infrastructure jobs. You should be operating with minimal supervision on daily cycles. Typical evidence: pre-start walkround and tyre checks, positioning under loading plant on the excavator’s terms, hauling on graded roads at safe speeds, reversing to the tip with a banksman or tip-edge protocol, discharging with body-up awareness of overheads and stability, and end-of-shift parking and reporting.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a rear-tipping dump truck at work, on a site a CTG assessor can visit. New operators should complete machine training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on the haul and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? See the NPORS Articulated or Rigid Dump Truck courses first, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Transporting Loads Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Transporting Loads Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Rear Tipping Dump Trucks to Receive, Transport and Discharge Materials in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Dump Truck NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — continuous haul cycles mean fast evidence.
Articulated and rigid — one NVQ or two?
Both machine types map to the rear-tipping unit; your portfolio evidences what you actually drive. Tell us your fleet at enrolment.
Is this the right page for a forward-tipping site dumper?
No — that’s a separate unit with its own page: Forward Tipping Dumper NVQ.
Can the whole haul fleet enrol together?
Yes — fleets on one earthworks job are ideal group enrolments. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
