Ride-on Roller NVQ Level 2

Ride-on Roller NVQ Level 2

Compaction makes or breaks the layer above it. Prove your competence on the ride-on roller with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own site, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.

Qualification Overview

Ride-on rollers finish what every other machine starts: fill that must hold a road, sub-base that must hold a slab, blacktop that must hold traffic. Pass counts, vibration settings, joint rolling and the discipline to stop when the material says stop — that’s operator judgement, and this NVQ documents it from the compaction work you already do.

A CTG assessor visits your site, observes real rolling behind pavers or on earthworks, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion covering pass patterns, edges and gradients. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.

You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Construction) with the ride-on roller unit evidenced under the Compacting Plant group — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. Your registration is confirmed against the current GQA specification at enrolment.

What the ride-on roller unit covers

The ride-on roller unit covers operating compacting plant to compact ground, fill and surfaced materials. Your certificate reflects the roller unit you’re registered for and evidenced on — it doesn’t automatically cover soil or landfill compactors, which are separate units (see the Soil Compactor NVQ). Pedestrian rollers are small plant handled differently — ask at enrolment if you use both.

Who this NVQ is for

Experienced roller operators on surfacing crews, earthworks and groundworks gangs. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: daily checks including drum, water system and ROPS, rolling behind the paver to temperature and pass count, compacting fill layers to the specification, joint and edge technique, working on gradients with the drum downhill judgement, and parking and securing the machine.

Entry requirements

No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a ride-on roller at work, on a site a CTG assessor can visit. New operators should complete roller training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.

This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.

NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?

NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on the gang and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? Start with the NPORS Ride-on Roller course, then return for the NVQ.

Units — mandatory and optional

You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Compacting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.

Mandatory units (all operators)

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

Your machine unit — Compacting Plant pathway

  • Preparing and Operating Ride-on Rollers to Compact Materials in the Workplace

Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Ride-on Roller NVQ take?

Typically 4–8 weeks — rolling happens on almost every shift, so evidence builds fast.

Tandem drum, single drum, pneumatic — which machines count?

Ride-on rollers of the types you genuinely operate; your portfolio names them. Tell us your fleet at induction.

I roll behind the paver on nights — can the assessor attend?

Yes, night surfacing shifts are routine for our assessors.

Can the surfacing gang enrol together?

Yes — roller, paver and dumper operators each on the right unit in one visit plan. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements

You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.

To start Level 2 qualification you need:

  • A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
  • Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
  • A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
  • Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
  • A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.

You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.

Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.

The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
