Roof Sheeting and Cladding NVQ Level 2
Industrial roofs go on sheet by sheet, at height, in wind — and have to keep the building dry for decades. Prove your sheeting competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your roofs, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Roof sheeters build the envelope that industrial Britain works under: built-up metal systems, composite panels, standing seam — laid to module, fixed to the wind calcs, flashed and sealed at every ridge and penetration, with rainwater goods that actually cope. This NVQ documents that competence from the roofs you already sheet.
A CTG assessor visits your projects, observes real sheeting and detailing at height, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Cladding Occupations (Construction), qualification code 601/8330/5, with roof sheeting, cladding and rainwater goods units evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What this qualification covers — and what’s optional
The Level 2 Cladding Occupations qualification is built around installing roof sheeting and cladding systems and associated rainwater goods, plus optional units chosen to match your work. Activities like MEWP use, installing roof-mounted solar collectors, slinging/signalling, and repair or refurbishment work are optional units within this qualification — they are not standalone pathways or separate NVQs, and we register only the units your work genuinely evidences. Wall-focused installers may suit the Wall Cladding NVQ framing of the same qualification.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced roof sheeters with cladding and envelope contractors on industrial, distribution and agricultural-to-commercial buildings. You should be installing with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: loading out and handling sheets safely at height, setting out to module and datum, fixing liner, spacer and weather sheets or composite panels to the fixing specification, sealing laps and forming ridge, verge and penetration details, installing gutters and downpipes, and leaving weathertight handovers.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must be sheeting at work now, on projects a CTG assessor can attend. Improvers should build trade experience first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Roof Sheeting and Cladding NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, following your contract programme.
I use a MEWP every day — is that a separate NVQ?
Within this qualification it’s an optional unit, not a separate pathway. A standalone MEWP plant NVQ also exists if your role justifies it — we’ll advise honestly. See the Boom Lift NVQ.
Is there a Level 3 for advanced sheeters?
A Level 3 route exists for complex structures and lead-installer roles, but it is not currently open for new registrations. Talk to us and we’ll advise on the best route for your experience.
Can the sheeting squad enrol together?
Yes — squads register together with optional units matched per person.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
