Service Operable Walls NVQ Level 3
Moveable walls fail slowly — carriers wear, seals drift, tracks loosen — until the day they won’t move. Prove your servicing competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your maintenance visits, on the typical route to the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS card. It costs £950 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Gold Advanced Craft card.
Qualification Overview
Service technicians keep operable walls operable: diagnosing why a panel drags, re-tensioning carriers, replacing seals and trolleys, certifying the wall safe in schools and public buildings where a dropped panel is unthinkable. It’s a diagnostic trade built on installation knowledge. This Level 3 NVQ documents that competence from the service visits you already make.
A CTG assessor joins your maintenance work, observes real servicing and fault-finding, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Interior Systems (Construction), qualification code 610/4449/0, through the Service Operable Walls pathway — the typical qualification route to the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS card.

What the Service Operable Walls pathway covers
One of three formal pathways of the Level 3 Interior Systems qualification — alongside Complex Suspended Ceilings and Stretched Ceilings — covering servicing and maintaining operable wall systems in the workplace. New installation is the Level 2 Operable Partition Systems NVQ; many technicians hold both.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced service technicians with operable wall manufacturers and maintenance specialists. You should be servicing with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: planned maintenance inspections to schedule, diagnosing operation and alignment faults, replacing carriers, seals and mechanisms, re-tensioning and adjusting for acoustic performance, load-path and fixing checks on suspended systems, and service reports and client sign-off.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications, but the qualification’s full Level 3 requirements must be achievable from your role — regular, genuine servicing work is the entry ticket. We confirm fit honestly at enrolment.
CSCS card route
This Level 3 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Service Operable Walls NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — service rounds give steady, varied evidence.
I install new walls and service existing ones — which route?
Installation is Level 2, servicing is this Level 3 pathway. Genuine dual roles can sequence both — we’ll advise honestly.
Occupied schools and venues — can assessment happen there?
Yes, assessors work to your clients’ access and safeguarding rules; that environment is normal for this trade.
Can our service engineers enrol together?
Yes — service teams register together with visits planned around the rounds.

Entry requirements
You work at advanced craft level, or you carry some responsibility for the standard of other people’s work, depending on the pathway you take.
To start Level 3 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
