Sideloader Forklift NVQ Level 2
Long loads, narrow aisles — sideloader work is specialist forklift work. Prove it with a work-based NVQ assessed in your own yard, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Sideloaders carry what nothing else can move indoors: full-length steel, timber packs, cladding sheets and pipe — picked from the side, carried on the bed, threaded through aisles with centimetres to spare. Load security and deck balance are the operator’s constant calculations. This NVQ documents that specialist competence from your normal shifts.
A CTG assessor visits your yard or works, observes genuine long-load handling, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion about bed loading, outrigger use and travel stability. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the sideloader unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the sideloader unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the sideloader unit covers lifting and transferring loads with a sideloader forklift. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Multi-directional trucks handle similar loads differently — tell us your exact machine at enrolment. Counterbalance and reach trucks are separate units with their own pages.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced sideloader operators in steel stockholding, timber and builders merchants, cladding and pipe yards serving construction. You should be operating with minimal supervision daily. Typical evidence: pre-use checks including bed, outriggers and mast, picking long loads square and centred, travelling with the load bedded and secure, aisle work with pedestrians controlled, loading vehicles evenly from the side, and stacking long-length racks safely.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a sideloader at work, somewhere a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use every shift and supports the Blue CSCS application. At the training stage? See the NPORS Side Loader course first, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Fork-lift Trucks pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Fork-lift Trucks pathway
- Preparing and Operating Sideloader Forklifts to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Sideloader NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, with daily yard work providing steady evidence.
I also drive a multi-directional truck — same unit?
Closely related but not identical machines. Describe both at enrolment and we’ll register what matches your main work — see also the NPORS Multi-Directional Forklift category.
Our loads are mostly 6–12 metre steel — is that the target evidence?
Exactly — long-length handling is the whole point of the unit.
Can the yard team enrol together?
Yes — sideloader, counterbalance and crane operators each register on the correct unit in one plan. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
