Skid Steer Loader NVQ Level 2
Small machine, serious work — demolition arisings, muck-away, tight-access groundworks. Prove your skid steer competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own jobs, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Skid steers earn their keep where bigger loaders can’t turn — inside buildings on demolition strips, between party walls on infill plots, in yards and basements. Zero-radius turning is also what makes them unforgiving: visibility is short, loads shift fast, and people work close. This NVQ documents the competence that keeps that combination safe, from your normal jobs.
A CTG assessor attends your work, observes real loading, moving and placing in confined conditions, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the skid-steer loader unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the skid steer unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the skid-steer loader unit sits in the Extracting Plant pathway group — extracting, loading and moving loose materials. Wheeled and tracked compact loaders both map here where the machine is genuinely a skid steer. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced; larger loading shovels are separate units with their own pages.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced skid steer operators in demolition, tight-access groundworks, landscaping-to-construction work, stables-and-farm conversions and internal strip-outs. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: daily checks including quick-hitch and guards, loading and carrying in confined areas with pedestrians managed, using bucket, forks or breaker attachments as your role requires, loading skips and dumpers evenly, and refuelling and securing the machine.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a skid steer at work, on jobs a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete machine training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on the job and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? Start with the NPORS Skid Steer Loader course, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Extracting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Extracting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Skid Steer Loaders to Extract Loose Materials in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Skid Steer Loader NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, tracking the jobs on your books.
Wheeled or tracked skid steer — both fine?
Yes, both map to the unit. Tell us your machine at enrolment so the paperwork matches it exactly.
I mostly load out demolition arisings inside buildings — valid evidence?
Very — confined internal work with people and structures close is the strongest demonstration of skid steer competence there is.
Can a small firm enrol two or three operators?
Yes, any group size works. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
