SPMT Operator NVQ Level 2
Bridges, transformers, vessels — when the load can’t be craned, it rides on your axle lines. Prove your SPMT competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on real moves, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Self-propelled modular transporters carry the loads that stop traffic — bridge decks rolled in overnight, transformers to substations, modules to energy projects. The operator controls hundreds of tonnes on hydraulic suspension through centimetre-tolerance moves planned weeks in advance. This NVQ is the recognised qualification for that specialist competence, evidenced from the moves you already crew.
A CTG assessor attends your operations — mobilisation, jacking and load transfer, the move itself — and gathers photos, witness statements from move supervisors and professional discussion about steering programs, load spread and contingency. No exams, no classroom, and assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the self-propelled modular transporter unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the SPMT unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the SPMT unit covers operating a self-propelled modular transporter to move specialist heavy loads. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Conventional low loaders and heavy haulage tractors are different work — see the transport units of this qualification or call us if your role spans both.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced SPMT operators with heavy-lift and engineered transport contractors on bridge, energy and industrial projects. You should be operating with minimal supervision within a move team. Typical evidence: pre-move inspections of power packs and axle lines, coupling and configuring trailers to the move plan, jacking and load transfer with monitored loadings, executing moves to the supervisor’s commands with steering and suspension control, and demobilisation.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate SPMTs on live moves a CTG assessor can attend. New crew members should complete equipment training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
Manufacturer and in-house training teach the equipment; the NVQ proves workplace competence on real moves and supports the Blue CSCS application. Both belong in a heavy-lift operator’s file — the NVQ is the part clients and card checks recognise nationally.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Self-propelled Modular Transporters – SPMT – to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the SPMT NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, though it tracks your move programme — infrequent moves stretch the plan rather than fail it.
Our moves happen at night in road closures — can assessment work?
Yes. Night possessions and closures are normal assessor territory; we plan attendance around the move schedule.
I’m one of several operators on a multi-trailer move — whose evidence is it?
Yours — coordinated multi-operator moves are strong evidence for each operator’s own portfolio, witnessed by the move supervisor.
Can the whole move crew enrol together?
Yes — crews often qualify together, and slinger/signaller and lift supervision NVQs can run alongside for the rest of the team.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
What card does this NVQ lead to?
Leads to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card
On completion you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, proving competence in your trade.
