Static Concrete Placing Boom NVQ Level 2
High-rise pours run through the placing boom — floor after floor, jump after jump. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your pours, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Static placing booms live on the structure they’re pouring — mast-mounted or deck-mounted, fed from a ground-level pump, swinging concrete across the deck by remote while the operator reads the placing gang and the line pressure at once. It’s the core plant of high-rise concrete frames. This NVQ documents that specialist competence from your normal pours.
A CTG assessor attends pour days, observes boom operation, placement control and communication with the pump operator below, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the static concrete placing boom unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the placing boom unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers operating a static concrete placing boom to discharge and place concrete. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. The truck-mounted boom pump and trailer pump feeding your boom are separate units — see the Truck-Mounted and Trailer-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQs; crews often qualify together.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced placing boom operators on concrete frame and core packages. You should be operating with minimal supervision on regular pours. Typical evidence: pre-pour checks of boom, pipework and remote, coordinating start-up with the pump operator, distributing concrete to the placing gang’s sequence, managing pipeline pressure and surges at height, controlled shutdowns and line-cleaning, and supporting boom jumps/climbs with the appointed team.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a static placing boom, with pours a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete equipment training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on pour days and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? See the NPORS Concrete Pump categories, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Transporting Loads Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Transporting Loads Plant pathway
- Preparing and operating static concrete placing booms to discharge and place materials in the workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Static Placing Boom NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — frame programmes pour weekly or better, so evidence builds steadily.
Does evidence from boom climbs and repositioning count?
Where you genuinely take part in jumps under the appointed team’s control, yes — it demonstrates understanding of the boom’s installed conditions.
The pump operator is a different person — does that limit my portfolio?
No, coordinated operation is the unit’s core. Your communication with the pump is itself evidence.
Can the frame contractor enrol boom and pump operators together?
Yes — one visit plan, correct units for each. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
