Trailer-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ Level 2
Line pumping puts the pour wherever the pipeline reaches — and puts the pressure management on you. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed at real pours, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Trailer-mounted line pumps take concrete where booms can’t reach — through buildings, into basements, up scaffolds, across gardens to a domestic slab. The operator manages a pressurised pipeline that must be laid, clamped, primed and cleared correctly every time, because line failures at pumping pressure injure people. This NVQ documents that competence from your normal pumping work.
A CTG assessor attends your pours, observes rig-up, pumping and line-clearing, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion covering pipeline routes, blockage handling and safe wash-out. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the trailer-mounted concrete pump unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the trailer pump unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers receiving, pumping and discharging materials with trailer-mounted concrete pumps. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Truck-mounted boom pumps are a Diploma unit (Truck-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ) and static placing booms have their own page — register on the rig you actually run.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced line pump operators serving groundworkers, basement contractors, screed and domestic concrete jobs. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: siting and stabilising the pump, laying and clamping pipeline with whip checks and protection, priming and establishing flow, matching output to the placing gang, clearing blockages safely with the line depressurised, and washing out with correct waste containment.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a trailer-mounted pump, with pours a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete pump training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use at pours and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? See the NPORS Concrete Pump course, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Transporting Loads Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Transporting Loads Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Trailer-mounted Concrete Pumps to Receive, Pump and Discharge Materials in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Trailer-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks, following your pour bookings.
I run boom pumps some weeks and the line pump others — which NVQ?
They’re separate units under separate qualifications. Tell us your genuine split and we’ll register the machine you mainly operate — or map both honestly if both are real.
Do domestic jobs count, or only big sites?
Any genuine pumping work counts — a domestic basement slab demonstrates the same pipeline competence as a commercial pour.
Can my pump crew enrol together?
Yes — operator and line hands can be assessed in one visit plan on appropriate routes. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
