Truck-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ Level 2
Boom pump operators carry the pour. Prove your competence with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own rig during real pours — no classroom, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
A truck-mounted boom pump turns a queue of mixers into a controlled, continuous pour — but only in the hands of an operator who can set the rig safely, manage the boom over people and structures, and read the concrete coming through the line. Blockages, overhead cables and outrigger loading leave no room for guesswork. This NVQ is the recognised proof of that competence.
Assessment happens at real pours. A CTG assessor attends your jobs, observes setup, pumping and wash-out, discusses how you plan boom movements and exclusion zones, and collects photos and witness statements from site teams you pump for. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, with the truck-mounted boom concrete pump unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the boom pump unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Diploma, the truck-mounted boom concrete pump sits in the Transporting Loads pathway group — receiving, pumping and discharging concrete. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. It doesn’t cover trailer-mounted pumps or static placing booms, which are separate units under the Plant Operations Certificate — see the Trailer-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ and Static Concrete Placing Boom NVQ if that’s your rig.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced boom pump operators working for pumping contractors, concrete suppliers or main contractors. You should be operating with minimal supervision and pumping regularly. Typical evidence: siting the rig and setting outriggers on assessed ground, checking clearances to cables and structures, slewing and placing the boom to the pour crew’s direction, managing mixer changeovers and line pressure, dealing with blockages safely, and washing out with correct waste handling.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You need to be operating a truck-mounted boom pump now, with pours a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete pump training first — the NVQ assesses competence you already have.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies machine skills; the NVQ proves workplace competence and supports the Blue CSCS application. New to pumping? See the NPORS Concrete Pump course first, then return for the NVQ once you’re working. CTG delivers both.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Transporting Loads Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Transporting Loads Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Truck-mounted Boom Concrete Pumps to Receive, Pump and Discharge Materials in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Truck-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — pour frequency drives the pace, and most boom operators pump often enough to finish quickly.
I pump on different sites every day — how does the assessor keep up?
We plan around your booking sheet. Evidence from multiple sites strengthens the portfolio rather than complicating it.
Does line-pump work count towards this NVQ?
Only boom pump evidence counts for this unit. If you mainly run a trailer/line pump, the Trailer-Mounted Concrete Pump NVQ is the right registration — call us and we’ll route you correctly.
Can a pumping contractor enrol several operators?
Yes — we assess fleets regularly. CITB-registered employers may also be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
What card does this NVQ lead to?
Leads to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card
On completion you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, proving competence in your trade.
