Volumetric Concrete Truck NVQ Level 2
You carry the batching plant on the back of the truck. Prove your volumetric competence — transporting, mixing and delivering to spec — with a work-based NVQ assessed on your drops, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Volumetric trucks batch on site: aggregate, cement and water carried separately, mixed fresh at the chute to the strength the customer ordered. The operator is driver, batcher and quality controller in one — calibration, mix proportions and clean discharge all sit with you. This NVQ documents that combined competence, strictly within what the qualification unit covers: receiving, transporting, mixing and delivering construction materials.
A CTG assessor meets you on deliveries, observes setup, mixing and discharge, and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom — assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the volumetric truck unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the volumetric truck unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, this unit covers receiving, transporting, mixing and delivering construction materials with a volumetric truck, as the unit defines it. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Conventional drum mixer trucks are a different vehicle — see the NPORS Concrete Mixer Truck category on the training side, and call us to be routed correctly if you drive both.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced volumetric operators delivering to groundworkers, builders and domestic customers. You should be operating with minimal supervision. Typical evidence: loading and stowing materials at the depot, calibration checks and mix settings for the ordered strength, siting the truck at the discharge point safely, mixing and discharging to the customer’s placement, managing part-loads and returns, and wash-down with contained waste.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a volumetric truck, with deliveries a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already use on your rounds and supports the Blue CSCS application. Training stage? See our NPORS courses first, then return for the NVQ.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Transporting Loads Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Transporting Loads Plant pathway
- Preparing and operating volumetric trucks to receive and transport materials in the workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Volumetric Truck NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — daily drops mean fast evidence.
Do domestic deliveries count as construction evidence?
Yes — a domestic footing pour is genuine construction delivery. Range across job types strengthens the portfolio.
Is the batching/quality side part of the assessment?
The unit covers the receiving-mixing-delivering cycle your machine performs, so calibration and mix control evidence belongs in scope as the unit defines it — your assessor maps it precisely at induction.
Can an operator team across our depots enrol together?
Yes — national coverage handles multi-depot fleets. CITB-registered employers may be able to claim a grant towards Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs — see our funding page.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.

On completion you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, proving competence in your trade.
