Construction Hoist NVQ Level 2
The hoist keeps the whole tower fed — people, materials, programme. Prove your competence as a hoist operator with a work-based NVQ assessed on your own site, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
On a high-rise job the hoist is infrastructure: every trade’s materials and half the workforce move through it daily. The operator manages loads, people, landing gates and weather — and when the hoist stops, the job stops. This NVQ recognises hoist operation as the skilled role it is, evidenced entirely from your normal working day.
A CTG assessor visits your site, observes real hoist operations — pre-use checks, loading within capacity, landing-level procedures, passenger control — and gathers photos, witness statements and professional discussion. No exams, no classroom, and assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, with the hoist unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the hoist unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Certificate, the hoist unit covers preparing and operating hoists to lift and transfer loads — goods hoists and passenger/goods hoists as used on your site. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. Mast climbers and MEWPs are different machines with their own units — see the Mast Climber NVQ if that’s your platform.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced hoist operators on high-rise residential, commercial and refurbishment projects. You should be operating with minimal supervision as the site’s designated hoist driver. Typical evidence: daily pre-use checks and function tests, managing loads within rated capacity and floor space, controlling passenger numbers and behaviour, landing gate discipline at every level, taking the hoist out of service in high winds, and liaising with the hoist erector on ties and inspections.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a construction hoist, on a site a CTG assessor can visit. New to hoists? Complete operator training first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. CSCS issues the card, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves the competence you already demonstrate every shift and supports the Blue CSCS application. At the training stage instead? See our NPORS courses first, then return for the NVQ once you’re the site’s hoist operator.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0453/3, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and Operating Hoists to Lift and Transfer Loads in the Workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Construction Hoist NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks — hoists run all day, so observation is easy to schedule.
I operate the hoist alongside other site duties — does that matter?
No, as long as hoist operation is genuinely part of your regular role. Mixed roles are common and the other duties may support other NVQs too.
Passenger hoist or goods-only — both covered?
Evidence comes from the hoist type you actually operate; both configurations map to the unit. Tell us your setup at enrolment.
Can the assessor visit a busy city-centre site?
Yes — our assessors work to your site’s induction and access rules, including tight urban jobs.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
