Mobile Crane NVQ Level 2
New site, new setup, new lift — every day. This work-based NVQ proves your competence on the mobile crane from real contract lifts, on the typical route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. It costs £750 fixed with no VAT, typically takes 4–8 weeks with assessment carried out remotely or on site from your normal work — no exams, no classroom, and leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card.
Qualification Overview
Mobile crane operators re-solve the same hard problem on every job: ground that has to hold, outriggers that have to spread the load, duties that change with every radius, and a lift plan that has to survive contact with the day. It’s competence you can’t fake — and this NVQ documents it from the contract lifts you already do.
A CTG assessor meets you on jobs, observes setup and lifting, reviews your inspection and duty records, and gathers witness statements from appointed persons and lift supervisors you work with. Professional discussion covers the judgement calls — ground assessment, configuration, weather. No exams, no classroom, and assessor visits are included as standard.
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, with the mobile crane unit evidenced — the typical qualification route to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.

What the mobile crane unit covers
Within the Plant Operations Diploma, the mobile crane sits in the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group — lifting and transferring loads. Your certificate reflects this unit as registered and evidenced. It doesn’t automatically cover crawler or tower cranes (separate Diploma units), lorry loaders or compact cranes (Certificate units) — tell us everything you operate and we’ll register the right route.
Who this NVQ is for
Experienced mobile crane operators — all-terrain, truck-mounted or city class — working for hire companies or contractors. You should be operating with minimal supervision on regular contract lifts. Typical evidence: route and site access checks, assessing standing and setting outriggers with mats, configuring boom and counterweight for the duty, executing lifts to the lift plan with slinger/signaller communication, de-rigging and travelling, and maintaining inspection and defect records.
Entry requirements
No formal entry qualifications. You must currently operate a mobile crane on jobs a CTG assessor can attend. New operators should complete training and testing first — the NVQ assesses existing competence.
CSCS card route
This Level 2 NVQ is the typical qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, together with the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. Mobile crane card routes can also involve CPCS/NPORS operator categories — the card schemes decide outcomes, not CTG. See our CSCS cards guide.
NVQ or NPORS — what’s the difference?
NPORS training and testing certifies operating skills; the NVQ proves workplace competence and is what card schemes typically ask for at the competent operator grade. Not operating yet? Start with the NPORS Mobile Crane course, then return for the NVQ once you’re on contract lifts.
Units — mandatory and optional
You achieve the GQA Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction), qualification code 601/0403/X, through two mandatory units plus the optional machine unit for the plant you operate — drawn from the Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway group of the official GQA specification. Your assessor maps your normal shifts to these units at enrolment.
Mandatory units (all operators)
- Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Your machine unit — Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant pathway
- Preparing and operating mobile cranes to lift and transfer loads in the workplace
Operate more than one machine? Additional units from the specification can be evidenced alongside — tell us at enrolment and we’ll register the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Mobile Crane NVQ take?
Typically 4–8 weeks. Regular contract lifts mean evidence builds quickly.
I’m on different sites every day for a hire company — how does observation work?
We plan around your allocation sheet. Multiple short jobs are ideal evidence because they show setup competence repeatedly, not just one long routine.
Do lifts with a full lift team count, or do I need to work alone?
Contract lifts under an appointed person are exactly the evidence the unit wants — coordinated lifting is the competence being assessed.
Will this NVQ move my operator card to the competent grade?
An achieved NVQ is what the card schemes typically require for that upgrade — we confirm the route for your specific card at enrolment rather than promising outcomes.

Entry requirements
You are already doing the work day to day, as an employee or self-employed. There are no entry qualifications and no exams — you are assessed on the job you already do.
To start Level 2 qualification you need:
- A relevant job to be assessed in. This is a competence qualification, so you must have access to real work of the right type while you are registered. No workplace, no evidence.
- Proof of identity — a passport, driving licence or similar, as the awarding body requires.
- A National Insurance number, so we can obtain your Unique Learner Number.
- Enough English to explain your work to your assessor and to talk through your evidence.
- A device with a camera — a phone is fine. Evidence is photos and short videos of your own work, uploaded to your e-portfolio.
You do not need: any prior qualification, any classroom attendance, or to sit an exam. Assessment is entirely in your workplace via a remote e-portfolio, nationwide.
Tell us about any support need, disability or learning difficulty when you enrol and we will arrange reasonable adjustments — it does not affect whether you can take the qualification.
The awarding body sets the final entry criteria for each qualification. If you are not sure whether your current role gives you the right evidence, ask us before you book — we would rather tell you honestly than register you for something you cannot complete.
